What are RSS News Feeds?
News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.
The acronym RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is used to describe the technology used in creating feeds.
Essentially a News Feed is a list of the latest headlines and brief summaries, from a particular website (eg. the BBC) and links to the full articles.
To read RSS feeds and subscribe to them, you will need a news reader.
How do I get a News reader?
A news reader is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.
Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.
There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.
To use a browser based reader (eg. IE or Firefox) you may need to download the most recent version of the browser.
Some other examples of News readers:-
How do I know if a website offers feeds?
When you first view a website, some browsers will search for feeds. If feeds are available, the Feeds button
on the toolbar will change colour to orange. If no feeds are available it will be greyed out. There will probably also be a link to the feed on the particular site.
How do I view a feed?
You can either click on the
link on the website or on the
button on the toolbar and select the feed that you wish to view.
How do I subscribe to a feed?
If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. If you are using a browser to read news feeds you can follow the “subscribe to feed” link and add it to your list of feeds in your browser, in a similar way to adding a bookmark.
Then you can use your preferred reader to keep track of your subscribed feeds, which will show when a particular feed has been updated or there are unread articles.
